GRAND PRIZE WINNERS OF THE VDID/DSM SOMOS PROTOFUNCTIONAL® DESIGN AWARDS PRESENTED AT EUROMOLD 2002

| During the course of a ceremony held at the design+engineering forum at the EuroMold 2002 fair, DSM Somos® and the VDID (Association of German Industrial Designers) publicly announced the winners in both the professional designers and students categories of the 2002 ProtoFunctional® Design Competition. |
Sponsored jointly by the VDID and prototyping materials specialist DSM Somos®, the international contest attracted interest and entries from around the globe to compete under the theme ‘AllesKönner’ (Truly Functional). Prizes were presented by the world renowned designer Professor Dieter Rams at the design+engineering forum design award event, EuroMold 2002 (Frankfurt 4-7 December). The awards were presented to: - 1st prize (5.000 euro certificate for RP services, registration and accommodation for the VDID/DDV Congress 2003) professional designer category: Victor Massip and Laurent Lebot (Faltazi studio - Nantes, France) for the egg beater ‘Jellynoctil’. Imagination and functionality is unleashed, demonstrating the advantages and design freedom permitted by layer additive technologies, while guaranteeing perfection in omelette making. - 1st prize (5.000 euro certificate for RP services, registration and accommodation for the VDID/DDV Congress 2003, 1 year honorary membership of VDID/DDV) student category: Ozge Kandemir (Turkey) for ‘coffee bean’, a new twist in transforming Turkish coffee traditions into an experience which unites the flavours and cultures of the world. The VDID/DSM Somos 2002 ProtoFunctional® Design competition The competition accepted entries from April to September 2002, open to both students and professional designers competing in separate contest sessions, with individual or group registration being allowed. At the close of the contest, registrations came from the four corners of the globe – from Canada and the Americas to Europe, Middle East and Asia. Competition entries were judged according to: unique application of free-form technologies, visual interest, originality, functionality and complexity of the design. The objects had to demonstrate the advantage of layer additive technologies, while taking into consideration the various benefits of presenting the prototype in the preferred ProtoFunctional® material of DSM Somos® for the specific application.
