FIRST EUROPEAN EDITION OF PROTOFUNCTIONAL® DESIGN COMPETITION ANNOUNCED
25 April 2002 - DSM Somos
| The German Design Association (DDV) and the German Industrial Design Association (VDID) together with DSM Somos®, innovation leader for high-tech rapid prototyping materials, have announced the launch of the first European edition of the ProtoFunctional® Prototype Design Competition. |
Under the theme of “Alleskönner” (Truly Functional), contestants will be requested to present projects which reunite the often-separated schools of functionality and aesthetics, and which would typically be difficult to prototype using processes other than layer additive technologies. Emphasizing creativity in design through the use of high-tech prototyping materials, the competition will provide participants with the opportunity to explore design freedom and to apply their inspirations to the object of their choice. Susanne Lengyel, VDID President comments: “Through the co-operation with DSM Somos®, the VDID/DDV aim to promote the combination of creativity and functionality, as well as the use of high-technology materials and processes.” “Our collaboration with the DDV and VDID stems from a growing interest from the engineering and industrial design sectors to be able to realize design concepts in a manner that facilitates the ultimate acceptance and commercial production of a given project. The competition recognizes the increasing value attributed in demonstrating as closely as possible end-use performance capability in the conception and development phases,” confirms James Reitz, business manager DSM Somos®. The entries will be judged against criteria including the uniqueness and particular application of free form fabrication technologies, visual interest and impact, the functional use of DSM Somos® ProtoFunctional® resins and originality, complexity and sophistication of the design. Entries will have to include the creation of an STL file for visualization of the design and a description of the added value and benefits delivered by the concept. A model of the design will be among the many prizes awarded.
