DSM SOMOS® RESINS ADD SPLASH TO NEW STEREOLITHOGRAPHY MACHINE

DSM Somos® announces the availability of DSM Somos® 9120 and DSM Somos® WaterClear™ 10120 for use with new 3D Systems' Viper Si2™ SLA® stereolithography system.

The broad use of Somos® resins across a wide variety of stereolithography equipment systems and the ease with which they can be dialed in for use on all machine platforms is critical to the customer experience. Since the commercial release of the new Viper Si2 ™ machine on July 12th, DSM Somos® resins have successfully been loaded into the Viper systems at three different locations: Express Pattern (www.expresspattern.com), FineLine Prototyping (www.finelineprototyping.com), and Vista Technologies (www.vistatek.com).

Vista Technologies President Jim Mishek explains that they chose to load the Somos® 9120 in the Viper machine based on the ease of implementing and continued use of the Somos® WaterClear™ 10120 resin in a SLA 5000 into their daily operations. 'Based on the success we had installing and running the 10120 beta resin, we felt confident that any of the other Somos® resins, including, Somos® 9120, would run just as easily on our other systems. The Viper machine has run non-stop with DSM Somos® 9120 since we have received it. We especially appreciated the on-site customer support DSM provided during start-up operations.'

Both Express Pattern and FineLine Prototyping chose the Somos® WaterClear™ 10120 to use in their Viper Si2™ SLA® system. Rob Connelly, President of FineLine Prototyping, explains why they chose the Somos® 10120, 'Our company works with a lot of medical device companies, and I can tell you that medical device designers hate yellow parts! A yellow medical device looks like it was either overexposed to radiation during sterilization, or was improperly processed during assembly. They spend a great deal of time and effort selecting materials that are UV and radiation stable. Also, for diagnostic purposes, their parts have to be optically clear in many cases. The DSM Somos® 10120 product is a big hit with them.'

Dave Flynn of Express Pattern concurs, adding 'The Somos® WaterClear™ 10120 running in the Viper Si2™ SLA® system gives us the best available combination of part detail resolution and mechanical toughness. Our customers choose the WaterClear™ 10120 not only for the color, but also for the part quality and functionality. The DSM Somos® WaterClear™ 10120 resin was commercially released on August 1, 2001. Other products within the family, Somos® 10110 and Somos® 10100, will be made commercially available within the month of November. Somos® 9120, with properties that mimic polypropylene, has been commercially available for over two years.
