CORUS EUROPRESSINGS BUSINESS ACHIEVES ISO/TS16949 QUALITY STANDARD

Corus, the international metals company, has announced that Europressings, its specialist metal pressings and sub-assemblies business, has acquired certification to the ISO/TS 16949 quality approval standard. Europressings has also achieved business accreditation to the International Safety Rating Standard, level 4 (ISRS).

Corus Europressings, based in South Wales, supplies precision pressed components to a number of leading automotive companies including, MG Rover Group, Keiper, Tenneco and Swindon Pressings. Commenting on the importance of achieving the ISO and ISRS standard to help the company meet its strategic goal of significantly growing its automotive business in 2005. Helen Raven, business development manager, Corus Europressings said: “The automotive industry demands the highest standards from its suppliers. Attaining these important quality standards underlines our commitment to provide our automotive customers with quality products and services that meet these exacting requirements. We believe that this is an important milestone and will help us to achieve our business goals for 2005”.

Corus Europressings, Wales joins the Corus’ aluminium extrusions operation in Duffel, Belgium, Strip Products business in South Wales and IJmuiden in the Netherlands, Autolaser Technologies and Automotive Service Centre businesses in Wednesfield, West Midlands and Special Strip business based in Dusseldorf, Germany, which already have also acquired ISO/TS 16949 certification. As a major supplier to the global automotive industry, Corus has been one of the first steel companies in the world to achieve the ISO/TS 16949 standard.

Until recently car manufacturers focused on their own quality standards. TS 16949 is a breakthrough in the automotive industry in that it represents a consensus amongst most of the world’s largest car makers and is a starting point in the harmonisation and globalisation of designer specified standards. Aimed primarily at tier one suppliers ISO/TS 16949 is a technical specification developed and supported by vehicle manufacturers in Europe, America and Japan and will help define quality system requirements for the global automotive supply chain.

Mrs Raven continues: “Importantly for our customers, having to meet third party approval through the ISO/TS 16949 standard means that our automotive customers can be assured that the quality management systems operating within Corus Europressings meet the most stringent requirements removing the need for them to undertake further second party audits.”

The ISRS standard assesses how a business identifies hazards in the workplace including injuries, damage to material, property and the environment and what plans a company has developed to minimise hazards and minimise losses. Helen Raven concludes: “At Corus we place great importance on health and safety in the workplace. We are delighted to have achieved business accreditation to the International Safety Rating Standard, level 4 and will continue to look at ways of improving health and safety both for the benefit of our employees and the service and products we supply our customers. “
