CORUS AUTOMOTIVE DIRECTOR LAUNCHES NEW AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING CENTRE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HERTFORDSHIRE

Professor Jon King, director of Corus Automotive, has officially opened the new Automotive Engineering Centre (AEC) at the University of Hertfordshire (26 June 2003). The new centre introduces modern facilities in automotive engineering design and technology for undergraduate courses and post-graduate research.

The £500,000 development brings together the best of education and industry to stimulate automotive research and development and will be the new home of the renowned IGDS (Integrated Graduate Development Scheme) Automotive Masters course offered by the University.

As both a visiting professor and former graduate of the university’s automotive engineering course, Professor King considers the development to be a demonstration of the University’s commitment to providing tomorrow’s engineers with the opportunities and educational foundation on which to base a lifetime of work.

I was delighted to be asked to officially open the new Automotive Engineering Centre, a facility which signifies the university’s commitment to providing students with the latest facilities so it can offer a continuing high standard of education and training in automotive engineering,” said Professor King. The University of Hertfordshire has an excellent reputation for the calibre of its automotive engineers. This centre is sure to enhance the current programme and see many of our future automotive engineering leaders through its doors.”

Situated next to the existing vehicle simulation laboratory, the new centre houses two engine test cells as well as two thermofluid and heat transfer laboratories alongside various gas, catalyst and other laboratories. In particular it will provide a practical basis to theoretical teachings on such work as computational fluid dynamics of engine gas flow. It will also provide leading-edge engine development facilities for the University’s two Formula Student racing teams, also unveiled on the night.

Commenting on the new facility, Professor Peter Bullen, Ford Professor and head of the department of Aerospace, Automotive and Design Engineering, added: We are extremely excited about the new opportunities this facility will provide for both the University and its students. It is a demonstration of our commitment to providing the most advanced and up-to-date teaching practices to help prepare our graduates for their professional careers.
