MOVING UP TO A NEW GENERATION OF HELICOPTERS
13 January 2004 - Hydro Aluminium
| From January 2005 the most modern helicopters available will be used for passenger transport to and from Hydro’s North Sea platforms. |
This became clear following the signing of a new helicopter transport contract between Hydro and CHC Helikopter Service. The contract, which encompasses the use of three helicopters, is worth approx. NOK 1.1 billion. “We are very pleased to have signed such a good contract providing us with modern helicopter transport to our offshore installations. Hydro is now moving up and investing in a new generation of helicopters. They represent a really forward-looking and cost effective means of transport, ensuring top safety plus more comfortable and faster journeys for our employees,” states Hydro sector president Torgeir Kydland. The contract with CHC Helikopter Service has a duration of seven years plus options. Including duties and fuel the contract’s total value over the seven years amounts to approx. NOK 1.1 billion. The contract will meet the transport needs of between 40,000 and 45,000 passengers each year. Hydro’s strategy is to employ two different types of helicopter for its offshore transport, the intention being to maintain a service in the case of breakdown. The contract with CHC Helikopter Service includes the procurement of two new Sikorsky S92s and one Super Puma L2. The new helicopters will be used on all Hydro’s services from Flesland to North Sea installations from January 2005 onwards. Sikorsky S 92, a new helicopter that has been tested for several years, has the capacity to carry 19 passengers. The Super Puma L2 represents an upgraded model offering improved passenger comfort. Hydro’s passenger transport requirements to and from Haltenbanken will be met by a new joint contract with Statoil and Shell.
