HYDRO COOPERATION WITH AMNESTY ON HUMAN RIGHTS
19 March 2002 - Hydro Aluminium

Norsk Hydro and Amnesty International have signed a cooperation agreement to bolster human rights work. The agreement, which will last for one year to begin with, entails financial support from Hydro amounting to NOK 1 million.

In return, Amnesty will offer Hydro its expertise in connection with the company's internal training of managers and employees on the handling of human rights in the various countries Hydro operates in.

'Hydro now operates all over the world, with activities in more than 70 countries. The company has made a commitment to human rights, and we need to learn more about how Hydro can ensure that it maintains high human rights standards and can help promote human rights in the areas we are operate. Amnesty has considerable expertise that can help Hydro and its employees to become more aware of and learn how to deal with the human rights challenges we face,' says Eivind Reiten, President and CEO of Hydro.

Hydro has extensive management development programs, for which Amnesty will provide training on general human rights questions, in addition to supporting the company in the study of concrete cases. Training programs directed to particular countries and problem areas will also be developed.

The agreement stipulates that this cooperation is intended to strengthen focus and work on human rights. Amnesty will continue to work independently of Hydro, also in its assessments of Hydro's operations. Hydro is also free to run its operations in the way the company sees fit, regardless of Amnesty's point of view.
