WORLD'S NOTHERNMOST WIND FARM - HAVØYGAVLEN IN FINNMARK
29 December 2001 - Hydro Aluminium

Norsk Hydro, Nuon and Norsk Miljøkraft have agreed to build a wind farm at Havøygavlen in the municipality of Måsøy in the county of Finnmark, Norway. For this purpose a new company has been established: Arctic Wind A.S. Nuon owns 53,5% of the shares, Norsk Hydro 41,5% and the developer of the windfarm, Norsk Miljøkraft 5%. Havøygavlen will be the world's northernmost windfarm.

The wind farm will consist of 16 wind turbines of 2,5 MW, making total installed capacity 40 MW. The project uses the latest wind energy technology and is located in a strong wind environment. Average wind speed exceeds 9 m/s, and wind conditions in Finnmark are in genral among the best in Europe. The calculated output of the wind farm is around 120 GWh per year. The wind turbines will be supplied, installed and operated by Nordex - a German-Danish wind turbine supplier.

Construction work will start in April 2002 and will be finalized in October. Total investment will be about 40 million Euro. The Norwegian Water and Energy Directorate (NVE) has approved an investment grant to the project of about 8 million Euro.

The realization of the wind farm is a result of a creative coooperation between Nuon and Norsk Hydro, making use of the parallel sale of renewable energy certificates (Green certificates) and generated electric power. Thanks to the sale of green certificates this project turned out to be an economically viable one. Green certificates represent the environmental value that energy generated by wind turbines or other renewable sources have.

For Norsk Miljøkraft and Norsk Hydro this project is their first wind power development. Based on this experience and the market development, Norsk Hydro will evaluate moving into further wind power projects.Nuon on their hand, have got wind power plants in seven countries with a total installed capacity of 350 MW.
