SSAB SENDS STATEMENT TO CARBONDIOXIDE INQUIRY
28 October 2003 - SSAB Oxelosund
| In June 2003 the EU decided to introduce trading of carbondioxide discharge rights for certain industries. The decision affects the steel industry since the carbondioxide discharge from steel production is included in the trade system. |
A Swedish inquiry called 'Flexmex2' has been assigned to propose how to divide the Swedish discharge rights. SSAB has submitted a statement to the inquiry, including the following viewpoints. Carbondioxide is a natural result of the chemical process when extracting steel from iron ore. The Swedish steel industry already has a high carbondioxide efficiency, due to our high quality ore, our efficient process and our well developed products, but also due to that 'clean' electricity has increased in both competitiveness and utilization. SSAB has one of the most carbondioxide efficient steelmills in the world. SSAB points out that the current proposal to allot national discharge rights could very well distort competition and halt growth, but also that the carbondioxide discharges could increase. Instead SSAB proposes a solution that is environmentally efficient and neutral in regards to competition, where the discharge rights are allotted by industry within the EU based on a fixed average discharge value (per tonne produced). This solution allows companies with lower discharge values to grow, while the ones with higher values are forced to work on efficiency. This maintains competition, and more importantly guarantees a reduction of carbondioxide discharge.
