RENCAST™ SYSTEM PROTECTS NORWEGIAN OFFSHORE APPLICATIONS/OPERATIONS
28 February 2004 - Huntsman Advanced Materials

Protective component shields made using the RenCast™ rapid casting system from RenShape® Solutions, are proving their worth in some of the most demanding marine environments in the world.

Marine Subsea Group AS in Åndalsnes Norway are using RenCast 5075/6414 two-part resilient polyurethane casting system to produce semi-flexible, impact resistant shields to protect a wide variety of external components on industrial fishing boats, boats used in the oil industry and subsea operations.

Using the RenCast system, Marine Subsea Group AS are able to rapidly produce shields in all types of different shapes and sizes. The part shown with this application weighed 210kg and had walls about 75mm thick. It is used in subsea operations as protective shields.

RenCast 5075A / 6414B was chosen for this application because of its excellent abrasion and impact resistance, flexibility and – critically important in this environment – it is nonsensitive to moisture, even corrosive salt spray.

The parts are cast in steel moulds. RenShape Solutions’s silicone based QZ13 releasing agent is used to free the parts from the mould.

“These parts have to withstand extremely harsh conditions,” said Jostein Berge at Marine Subsea Group AS. “So we needed a casting system that while fast, would still be able to produce parts able to resist water, impact and abrasion. They also have to withstand thermal cycling and exhibit excellent elongation properties.”

RenCast 5075/6414 has a Shore Hardness of 70A, tensile strength of 6-8MPa and an elongation at break point of 200-250%.
