RENSHAPE® SL 7560 USED TO BUILD FUNCTIONAL, ABS-LIKE HAIRDRYER MODEL
30 November 2002 - Huntsman Advanced Materials

RenShape Solutions unique new ABS-like stereolithography material, SL 7560, has been used to produce 28 highly complex and detailed parts for the functional model of a new portable hairdryer - in just three days.

Rapid Tech International Company Ltd in Taiwan used the RenShape SL 7560
photopolymer to build a hairdryer with the appearance, surface finish and physical
characteristics of an injection moulded ABS thermoplastic, in a much shorter time
than the two to three weeks that conventional polythene casting from silicone moulds or CNC-machining from an ABS sheet, would take.

With SL 7560 Rapid Tech quickly produced each of the intricate components that
made up the hair dryer. The accurate ABS-like miniature parts were then assembled into a working unit that was used to evaluate the aesthetic appearance and design dimensions, and verify the planned assembly procedures. It was also used to test basic functionality and gauge customer and market place acceptance.

The company also initiated discussions on production tooling based on the models.
Time was very important to us on this project, said Ernest Yen, General Manager at
Rapid Tech. We had to complete the assembled model as quickly as possible,
eliminate any problems and start machining production tools all in about two months.

RenShape Solutions SL 7560 helped us meet our deadlines while also minimising
costs and producing complex ABS thermoplastic like models with an outstanding
surface straight from the vat.

RenShape SL 7560 is the only SL photopolymer available that looks and feels like
ABS thermoplastic. It has a unique combination of rigidity, durability and heat
resistance. The opaque white product has a rigid flexural modulus of 2400 MPa,
elongation of 15%, notched Izod impact strength of 40 J/m and a high heat deflection temperature of 86ˇC with a postcure and 60ˇ without a postcure. This new product is easy to process with a low viscosity, fast photo speed and high green strength.
