TVR USE ARALDITE® ON TYPHON
30 March 2004 - Huntsman Araldite
| The Araldite® SMC bonding range is recognised for the high performance it derives from the latest polyurethane and epoxy adhesives technology. It was this ability to withstand extreme fatigue and environmental conditions that led TVR Engineering Ltd to specify Araldite for a range of SMC bonding applications on their new Typhon sports car. |
Araldite AV 4076-1 opaque epoxy adhesive and HV 5309-1 hardener have been used to bond a range of substrates in key components on the Typhon. These include pre-preg epoxy carbon fibre panels and powder coated steel. During construction of the Typhon, the transmission tunnel and floorpan are bonded to the floors and the main body is then bonded to the transmission tunnel, floors and chassis. “Bonding rather than welding was the original design solution we chose for the Typhon,” explained Chris Runciman. Project Manager at TVR. “The main benefits of this for us are the better fatigue performance and less distortion under stress, good corrosion resistance and greater load distribution – all critical in a high performance sports car.' “We specified Araldite AV 4076-1 for this application because of the product’s proven track record in SMC bonding. This showed the adhesive’s performance was dependable through its entire lifecycle and that the bonded joints would be able to withstand extremely hard road and track use of the car.” Araldite AV 4076-1/ HV 5309-1 also offers high impact resistance, can withstand a wide range of environmental temperature changes and is resistant to engine and exhaust byproducts, such as water, fuel and oil. TVR currently produce around 25 of the highly specialised Typhon sports cars per year, for sale to customers all over the world.
