SPORTS BICYCLES FRAMES BONDED WITH ARALDITE
22 December 2003 - Huntsman Araldite
| CBT Italia manufacture high performance sports bicycles for professional and amateur riders. In order to reduce cycle weight and improve aerodynamics, CBT use the most advanced manufacturing techniques, including bonding the lightweight carbon fibre and aluminium tube frames with Araldite 420 epoxy adhesive. |
Each frame consists of a series of aluminium tubes bonded to the same sized carbon fibre tubes through a small fibreglass insert sliding inside the joint. This results in an invisible, extremely strong joint, unique to CBT’s manufacturing technique on their top of the range bicycles. On other their other bicycles CBT use a different type of joint where smaller diameter carbon fibre tubes are inserted into the aluminium ones and bonded together using Araldite 420. A series of tough, dynamic tests are carried out on the joints, which have to withstand the vibration equivalent to a 100,000km over paved streets. “Our frames are extremely light,” said Mr Bruno Tardivo, Director of CBT. “They weigh about 1.5kg and have to carry loads up to 95kg at around 110km/h. Therefore the adhesive we use must be the best available in terms of reliability, bonding strength and high performance. That is why we selected Araldite 420, whose widespread use in the aerospace industry proves its ability to perform under extreme conditions.' “We were really impressed with Araldite 420’s shear and peel strength and its fatigue resistance in every sort of working condition. We’ve never had a single customer report the slightest creaking noise or flaw in any of the joints in our frames.” Araldite 420 is an extremely tough, resilient two-component epoxy adhesive whose properties also include high dynamic and impact resistance, high mechanical strength and flexibility and good moisture resistance. It is widely used in the aerospace industry to bond carbon fibre, reinforced composites, aluminium, rubber, glass fibre and many plastic substrates.
