ARALDITE® WINS OLYMPIC GOLD FOR AUSTRALIA
30 July 2002 - Huntsman Araldite
| The blades that propelled Steven Bradbury over the finishing line to win the first ever Winter Olympic Gold medal for Australia at Salt Lake City 2002 were bonded with Araldite structural adhesives from Vantico. |
One of the grades of Araldite from the Araldite 2000 series of structural adhesives was the preferred bonding solution for Denis Pennington, whose company, Pennington Speed Equipment, manufactured the winning blades. The Araldite 2000 range of structural adhesives provides a bonding solution for every fastening requirement, particularly for new, non-metallic substrates such as composites and engineering plastics. Established for over 21 years, Pennington Speed Equipment has been making and exporting a specialist range of ice skating blades for the short-track racer. The company supplied the whole Australian speed skating team with these blades. Denis Pennington comments: “The strength and durability of the ice skating blade plays a major role in the speed and safety of the skater. The skater can reach speeds of up to 50 km per hour, so it’s imperative that the equipment used must reach the highest standard of safety and durability. “We use Araldite to join the steel blade to the extrusion. We find that this product stands up to the rigours and testing conditions to which the skating blades are exposed, particularly the G-forces exerted on the blade at the start, the extreme cold of the ice surface as well as impact with other skaters.”
