SR SIGNS STICKS WITH ARALDITE®
31 January 2002 - Huntsman Araldite

Industrial and corporate signage manufacturers SR Signs, in Burnley, Lancs, have turned to Araldite 2021 from Vantico’s Araldite 2000 series of industrial adhesives, for the production of their sign frames and other components.

Originally intended to be welded or riveted, the joint design has been adapted for
bonding, in order to speed up the production process. After having tested a number of adhesives, SR Signs opted for Araldite 2021, a two-component, room temperature curing, methacrylate general-purpose adhesive for rapid assembly operations on a wide range of substrates.

To manufacture the signs, Araldite is used to bond a growing number of different
substrates such as aluminium, di-bond composite sheeting, foamex and acrylics.
Aluminium is usually used to construct the framework and projecting/fascia signage
whilst di-bond, foamex and acrylics are used for flat panel and fabricated sign
components.

Paul Davenport, Project Manager at SR Signs is an enthusiastic supporter of adhesive bonding: “Araldite 2021 has made a big impact on our production process. We have been able to halve the time it takes to manufacture various types of signage due to minimal set-up and preparation times. There is also an added advantage that being able to bond dissimilar materials has contributed greatly to our freedom to design and build exactly what the customer is looking for.

“To be absolutely sure that we made the right choice, we tested the bonded joints
thoroughly. We got the lads in the workshop physically to test the strength and try to dislodge them but they remained complete.”

SR Signs was particularly impressed with the ability of Araldite 2021 quickly to produce strong joints and to fill gaps as well as its very good resistance to adverse weather conditions, such as cold, wet and high winds.

Araldite 2021 is a two-component toughened methacrylate adhesive system which will bond a wide range of plastics, composites and metals. It has high shear and peel strengths, very good resistance to chemicals and water, is very fast curing and has good gap filling properties. The adhesive is suitable for service at temperatures up to 100°C.
