ARALDITE® ELIMINATES FAILURE IN ELEVATOR DOORS

| Memco is the world’s leading supplier of the infra-red “curtains” used in the
elevator industry to prevent the doors from closing, if a light beam is broken. |
In such systems reliability is a key issue and Memco has been using Vantico’s Araldite 2010 epoxy adhesive as a simple, attractive solution to an operational problem. Some customers were experiencing a problem with a special product made for the Japanese market, with the inter-board surface mount connectors failing and literally tearing off the PCBs. This caused the whole unit to fail. Close inspection showed that the PCBs were insufficiently supported by the unit’s anodised aluminium chassis. An adhesive-based solution had to be found as it was not possible to use any other mechanical fixing method due to the lack of access. “We needed a relatively quick method (10-20 minute cure) which did not need an external catalyst, such as activator sprays”, says Mark Sawyer, Production Engineering Manager at Memco. “To prevent health and safety problems adhesives with a high volatile content were not appropriate and, although cyanoacrylates were assessed, they were found to be too brittle and would not cure properly in the restricted space available. An ordinary two-part epoxy was found to work but would not meet the vibration and shock test specified by our Japanese customers. “ After a long series of trials where most of the adhesives on the market proved to be unsuitable for such a specialised application, Memco decided to try Araldite 2010, a two-component, toughened epoxy paste, produced by Vantico. This multipurpose, thixotropic adhesive shows high shear and peel strength, and it cures in a few minutes at room temperature. It met all the performance and health & safety criteria required by Memco for this application. “Since we perfected our manufacturing process with the addition of Araldite 2010”, Mark Sawyer continues, “this inter-board unit failure has been eliminated completely.”
