STRATEGO® FUNGICIDE GRANTED SECTION 18 EXEMPTION TO CONTROL ASIAN SOYBEAN RUST
17 December 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted a Section 18 quarantine exemption for STRATEGO® Fungicide to control Asian soybean rust on soybeans in Minnesota and South Dakota. Other soybean-producing states are expected to grant similar approval in coming weeks. |
STRATEGO is a fungicide premix that delivers locked-in residual control against diseases. The two active ingredients work together to inhibit spore germination on the plant surface and fungal growth within plant tissues. STRATEGO will be most effective against Asian soybean rust when applied as a preventive measure. Research in Brazil demonstrates that treating soybeans preventively with STRATEGO helps protect seeds and pods, thus safeguarding yields. Trials conducted in 2004 show that soybeans treated with STRATEGO yielded up to twice as much as untreated acres. Asian soybean rust, caused by the pathogen Phakopsora pachyrhizi, has devastated soybean crops throughout the world, most recently in Brazil and Argentina. The presence of Asian soybean rust in the United States was announced on November 10. Left untreated, Asian soybean rust quickly defoliates soybean plants. In some parts of the world, growers have seen yield losses of up to 80 percent when soybean acres are infected with Asian soybean rust and not protected. According to Jim Bloomberg, Director of Fungicide Product Development for Bayer CropScience, “Fungicides will be the only effective way for growers to safeguard their yields against Asian soybean rust. Because of the fast-acting nature of Asian soybean rust, preventive fungicides will be the preferred way of maximizing yield.” Researchers in the U.S. have learned a lot from Brazil on how to manage Asian soybean rust. “Traditionally, fungicides were applied to soybeans in Brazil between R3 and R6 stages to control late-season diseases. But since Asian soybean rust developed in Brazil, fungicide application often occurs at R1 stage or earlier. Asian soybean rust will need to be prevented or stopped early because it’s such a fast-acting disease.” Bloomberg added.
