BAYER MATERIALSCIENCE LLC DEVELOPS NOVEL OPTICAL-GRADE CAST ELASTOMERS FOR APPLICATIONS FROM OPHTHALMIC LENSES TO BALLISTIC ENCLOSURES
17 June 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

As a result of the increased global demand for safety and security products, Bayer MaterialScience LLC has developed and patented a novel aliphatic polyurethane cast elastomer technology that enables the production of highly transparent, optical/ballistic-grade parts with unique property profiles.

These parts, which can range from extremely hard to very soft and flexible, have high impact strength and high abrasion/scratch resistance. They also have excellent optical properties and weigh less than comparable parts made of polycarbonate or acrylic.

Initial testing indicates that these new optical grade cast elastomers from Bayer are ideal for critical applications ranging from ophthalmic lenses and flexible visors to bulletproof enclosures.

'With this technology, it is also possible to produce parts that possess extremely high energy absorption properties,' said Bill M. Worms, head-specialties marketing, Bayer MaterialScience. 'Monolithic polyurethane sheets of this material are being tested for use in bullet-resistant glazing applications and represent a potential step-change in technology from the high-cost laminates currently used in such applications,' Worms continued. 'We are exploring further applications.'
