BAYER POLYMERS AND WARNER INDUSTRIES LLC GIVE STANDARD STEEL GARAGE DOORS A FACELIFT
22 March 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| Unique alternatives to standard, steel garage doors developed by Warner Industries LLC, are revolutionizing the garage door industry. |
TransformaDoor™, a retrofit kit designed to overlay an existing garage door, and Carriage Lite™, a line of factory-assembled carriage house doors, are changing the face of typical garage doors and transforming them into 'wooden' works of art. TransformaDoor™ and Carriage Lite™ feature Xerilite™ cladding, a new, lightweight composite incorporating a custom blend of Bayer Polymers LLC’s Baydur® LFT RIM (reaction injection molding) system. Keeping pace with Warner Industries’ recent finish in the Top 2 percent at the 2004 International Builders Show, these panels are entered in the Building & Construction Category of the New Product Design Competition at Structural Plastics 2004, the 32nd Annual Conference of the Society of the Plastics Industry’s Structural Plastics Division, held March 21-23, 2004, in Charlotte, N.C. The 1/8-inch-thick Xerilite™ composite panel is stainable, paintable, weather resistant and provides increased insulation. Xerilite™ is virtually indistinguishable from the look and feel of aged wood. But unlike its wooden predecessor, it won’t warp or deteriorate. When installed, the economical panels replicate the custom look and feel of a real wood carriage door, but without the excessive weight, maintenance and price. Customers can choose from several existing styles or create their own unique style to achieve a truly custom look. Bayer Polymers’ innovative long fiber technology (LFT) is used to fabricate the panels. Long fiber technology, in which long glass fibers are injected along with the polyurethane resin in a one-step process, produces high-strength composite parts more economically than the traditional two-step process of inserting preforms and/or fiberglass mats into the mold and then pouring the polyurethane resin over the preform or mat.
