BAYER POLYMERS' RESEARCHERS DISCUSS THE DEVELOPMENT OF UV-CURABLE WATERBORNE POLYURETHANE DISPERSION FOR SOFT FEEL APPLICATIONS
19 February 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Researchers with Bayer Polymers will present a paper on the development of waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD's) for soft feel applications.

Soft-touch coatings are used in a number of plastic applications across a wide range of markets including automotive interiors, consumer electronics, exotic packaging applications, hand held plastic consumer goods, and graphic arts.

The paper is entitled Development Of UV-Curable Waterborne Polyurethane Dispersion For Soft Feel Applications.

The researchers will explain the benefits of one- or two-component cross-linked films in terms of chemical resistance and mechanical durability, particularly in soft-touch coatings, which showed good resistance to suntan lotion and insect repellent.

'One of the greatest limitations to the success and expansion of soft-touch coatings technology has been its poor chemical resistance,' said Lockhart. 'This study sought to increase the resistance to suntan lotion by increasing the crosslink density of soft-touch coatings through UV-cure without compromising the softness of the coatings.'
