BAYER POLYMERS' RESEARCHERS DISCUSS NEW APPROACHES TO WEATHER STABLE SPRAY ELASTOMERS
19 February 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Researchers with Bayer Polymers will present a paper discussing new approaches to weather stable spray elastomers used as truck bed liners.

The new approaches include the use of light stable elastomers based on aliphatic polyisocyanates, used alone or in combination with aromatic elastomers, in a layered or composite system. The paper is entitled New Approaches To Weather Stable Spray Elastomers.

Zielinski, Rosthauser and Perry will discuss an aliphatic system, which consists of polyesters, polyaspartic esters, and adducts based on hexamethylene diisocyanate.

Their paper compares chemistry, formulation approaches, application equipment, and physical properties of traditional systems with various new aliphatic and composite systems.

'The traditional truck bed liner system has proven to be effective in all respects except weatherability,' said Zielinski. 'The composite approach is one way to allow the applicators to pigment the bed liners to match the color of the remainder of the vehicle and still meet the performance requirements for this application while reducing the impact on system cost.'
