BAYER POLYMERS' RESEARCHERS DISCUSS DIETHYLMALONATE BLOCKED ISOCYANATES AS CROSSLINKERS FOR LOW TEMPERATURE CURE POWDER COATINGS
18 February 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Researchers with Bayer Polymers will present a paper discussing the use of a newly designed solid diethylmalonate (DEM) blocked isocyanates as crosslinker for low temperature cure powder coatings.

The paper is entitled Diethylmalonate Blocked Isocyanates As Crosslinkers For Low Temperature Cure Powder Coatings.

The researchers will discuss the use of diethylmalonate as a blocking agent for powder coatings crosslinkers and its application and utility in various powder chemistries. A key part for the development of these materials is a comprehensive knowledge of the blocking reaction, which will be presented in details with supporting Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) data.

'There is growing interest to lower the cure temperature of powder coatings and expand the application of this technology to heat sensitive substrates, but there is also even a higher desire to speed up the coatings process,' said Fäcke. 'For the first time a solid DEM based crosslinker, has been successfully designed and developed, which has significant application potential in the powder coatings field.'
