BAYER PRESENTS TECHNICAL PAPER ON HNBR/EVM BLENDS FOR AUTOMOTIVE POWERTRAIN APPLICATIONS AT ACS RUBBER EXPO 03
14 October 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| Hydrogenated acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) compounds provide excellent mechanical properties, as well as heat, oil and fluid resistance in many demanding automotive applications. |
Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVM) compounds possess excellent compression set, heat resistance and processability. The unique combination of both Bayer's Therban® HNBR and Levapren® EVM results in elastomeric compounds which exhibit good processability and desired compound properties to meet automotive sealing applications. In fact, blends of HNBR and EVM may even be considered as AEM replacements in specific applications. This presentation reviews the effect on key compound properties upon incremental addition of EVM into an HNBR formulation and then focus on blends containing EVM as the major component. The performance of the EVM/HNBR blend in several automotive fluids, including oil, grease, power steering and transmission, is highlighted.
