BAYER POLYMERS ANNOUNCES FIRST COMMERCIAL APPLICATION OF ITS MILENA™ COLORING TECHNOLOGY FOR OPTICAL MEDIA
22 September 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| Bayer Polymers’ Milena™ mix-and-match coloring technology – a part of the company’s Fantasia™ colors and special effects marketing program – was selected by Capital Music EMI to enhance David Bowie’s 30th anniversary double CD release of ‘Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars – The Motion Picture Soundtrack.’ |
The special edition CD is made of Bayer Polymers’ MakrolonÒ polycarbonate and colored to achieve the artist’s signature ‘David Bowie Red. 'We are excited that the first application of this technology is with the work of David Bowie, one of music’s pioneers over the last several decades,' said John Skabardonis, Bayer Polymers America’s Fantasia marketing manager. 'This application is a good example of how Milena coloring technology can help customize and brand a CD to match an artist’s unique identity.' With Milena technology, color concentrates supplied by Clariant Masterbatches are metered directly into the feed throat of a molding machine, which results in the customers having a cleaner and more efficient mix-and-match coloring process. The color concentrates are dye-based and tested prior to use to ensure that they will not interfere with how the laser reads the data on the CD or DVD. 'Milena coloring technology is more time efficient and cost effective compared to conventional coloring processes because it requires fewer procedures, less equipment, and eliminates the need for customers to buy several different pre-colored resins,' added Skabardonis. Milena Is Part of Bayer Polymers’ Fantasia Special Color Effects Program With five separate technologies and a wide array of unique color and special effects options, Fantasia is the industry’s most complete, one-stop solution for color and special effects. To meet customers’ wide range of design, processing and cost parameters, Fantasia includes five technologies for adding see-and-feel effects to various plastic-based products: Aura™ – A proprietary color infusion technology. Leda™ – Compounded color effects. Imagio™ – High-quality coatings. Faria™ – Film-insert molding technology. Milena™ – Colors for optical media.
