BAYER POLYMERS' SYNTHETIC RUBBER REPRESENTED BY FOUR TIRE COMPANIES AT NPE 2003
22 June 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Among the important characteristics that Bayer Polymers rubber offers to the tire industry are: impermeability to air, wear resistance, anti-aging qualities, high- and low- temperature resistance, resistance to abrasion, and flexibility.

Several types of Bayer Polymers' rubber go into the production of tires. These include:

BIIR and CIIR (bromobutyl and chlorobutyl) used for tire inner liners;
BR (polybutadiene) found primarily in tire treads, sidewalls and carcasses;
S-SBR (solution styrene-butadiene rubber) also used in tire treads;
EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene rubber) used in white sidewalls and lettering on tires; and
Several rubber chemicals used in tire manufacturing as antioxidants and accelerators.

Tire Fast Facts
When you are riding in your car, the portion of the rubber that hits the road on each of those four tires is mere inches, an area about the size of four postcards. All too often, motorists forget the importance of tires. Without tires, your car can't move. Most safety experts believe that tires are one of the most critical operating components of your vehicle. Tires determine acceleration, steering, control and braking. For example, did you know that:

Tires are the most neglected item on your vehicle;
Tires account for nearly 20 percent of vehicle energy losses; and
Tires are complex products containing multiple layers of rubber,
nylon or other fabrics and steel cords.
