BAYER POLYMERS IS 'CREATING THE FUTURE' AT NPE 2003 EXHIBIT
22 June 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| From the industry's first extrudable, thermoformable nylon, to colorful CDs and DVDs made of Bayer's Makrolon® polycarbonate resin and colored with Milena mix-and-match coloring technology - a part of the company's Fantasia colors and special effects marketing program -and to outer panels of the 2003 GMC Sierra Denali pickup truck molded from Bayer's Bayflex® 190 polyurethane reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM) system, Bayer demonstrates that the future is now. |
'At NPE we plan to show attendees firsthand our advancements in a variety of polymers materials, our innovative, forward-thinking technologies, and the real-world applications where these two elements successfully come together,' said Ian Paterson, Head, Bayer Polymers' Americas Region and President and CEO of Bayer Polymers LLC. 'In addition, this is a great opportunity to acquaint attendees with the new Bayer Polymers organization,' he continued. New Materials Meet Global Challenges Understanding what the customer needs is the hallmark of Bayer's research and development into new materials. New or improved Bayer materials being introduced at NPE include: The industry's first extrudable/thermoformable nylon grades; A new grade of Makrolon polycarbonate resin; Three new grades of Makrofol® polycarbonate film; New grades of soft-touch TPUs; A non-halogen FR (flame retardant) grade of Durethan® polyamide; and, A new grade of Pocan® thermoplastic polyester. Innovative Technologies As one of the world's premier polymers suppliers and technological innovators, Bayer is highlighting a number of innovative technologies with applications in a range of markets, including automotive, agricultural/industrial, consumer, information technology and medical. These technologies include: Film Insert Molding (FIM) Thin Wall Molding Plastic/Metal Hybrid Thermoforming Extrusion Exatec, the joint venture company of Bayer and GE Plastics established to develop polycarbonate glazing for the automotive industry, also will be featured. Real World Applications From automotive tires to a swim spa, Bayer will be displaying products from all types of customers using all types of technologies and polymers. A few of the highlights include: Soundog1 Wireless Audio System - Demonstrating that you can teach an old dog new tricks, Sprox, Inc., the manufacturer of Soundog wireless tabletop audio systems, switched from wood housings to housings made of Bayer Polymers' clear or white Makrolon polycarbonate resin and enhanced with Bayer's proprietary Fantasia Aura color infusion technology. The Soundog systems can be heard - and seen - at the FOX Sports sky boxes at airports throughout the nation. 2003 GMC Sierra Denali pickup truck panels - The truck box outer panels of the Sierra Denali pickup truck are made using the Bayflex 190 reinforced reaction injection molding (RRIM) system. Manufacturers are finding that the Bayflex 190 polyurethane system is an excellent alternative to sheet metal or SMC (sheet molding compound) for exterior automotive applicationssuch as body panels, bumpers and tailgates. Vision2 Blood Cardioplegia System - This breakthrough device, from Gish Biomedical, Inc., is an example of good things coming in small packages. The 'heart' of the system is the clear plastic device. It is used in cardiac surgery to cool and warm blood, and is about the size of a human fist. The structural strength, biocompatibility and clarity - it is critical for the perfusionist to be able to see how the blood is flowing and to see if there are any bubbles in the blood - are provided by a medical grade of Bayer's Makrolon polycarbonate resin. With Bayer Polymers, the Future is Now NPE attendees will be welcomed into the Innovation Dome, located at the heart of Bayer's exhibit. It is here that the technologies and applications of the future will come to life via video and computer technology. In the dome, attendees can ca tch a glimpse into the future of product design made possible with polymers. Attendees can also have a hand in creating the future. Bayer personnel will assist attendees in sketching their own vision using a special tablet PC device. Attendees who do so will be eligible for a daily prize giveaway.
