BAYER FIBERS GROUP IN USA OUTFITS TRIO OF RUNNERS IN WORLD'S TOUGHEST RACE
01 May 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

The Fibers Group of Bayer Polymers LLC has announced that its Dorlastanâ fiber is used in the tee-shirts and seamless running pants worn by three Bayer Polymers-sponsored competitors in the tough Trans-Europe run.

The run, considered the ultimate in great sporting adventures, is longer, more grueling and more extreme than its transcontinental precursors, the Trans-America and Trans-Australia events. Staged over 64 days, the 5,017 km (about 3,117 miles) run takes the participants from Lisbon, Portugal, to Moscow, Russia. With no rest day, the distance equals more than 80 km (approximately 50 miles)---about two marathons!---a day. The starting gun was fired on April 19 in Lisbon when a group of about 50 men and women competitors set off for Moscow's Red Square.

The Bayer Polymers-sponsored contestants: Helmut Schieke, Manfred Leismann and Wolfgang Schwerk, are outfitted in Gonsoâ shirts and seamless running pants--- a new development by Bayer Fibers and Gonso--- that are produced with Bayer's Dorlastanâ elastic fibers.

Fabric construction of the tee-shirt is 87% Polyester (Trevira/Micro) and 13% Dorlastanâ . Fabric construction of the seamless running pants is:

Sandwich plating
30% PA 6.6 Meryl Skinlife text. (Rhotex), dtex 44f34x1 (inside)
5.5% Dorlastanâ dtex 22
64% PA 6.6 text. (Rhotex) dtex 44f34x2.
Fabric construction of the waistband is 0.5% Dorlastanâ dtex 230.

The Bayer trio is also clocking up the miles with the help of other Bayer materials: Diadora trainers (Bayflexâ footwear) and Uvex sports glasses (Makrolonâ ). Key in helping the runners' bodies take the strain of the race is breathable microfiber clothing and running shoes made with high-tech plastics.

Visitors to the 2003 International Hosiery Exposition and Conference (IHE), May 3 -- 6, in Charlotte, N.C., can view the racers' clothing at Bayer booth #1511. The Bayer Polymers' competitors claim their running clothing is not made especially for them. 'Anyone can buy these items in sports stores,' says runner Manfred Leismann.
