BAYER POLYMERS' IMAGIO™ COATINGS SOLUTION OFFERS A WIDE RANGE OF COLORS AND SPECIAL EFFECTS OPTIONS FOR PLASTIC PART DESIGN
12 March 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Candy Apple Red. Painted Desert. Silver Chrome. Bayer Polymers' Imagio™ resin-plus-coating technology solution provides customers with a wide range of colors and special soft-feel effects options for next generation plastic product design.

One of five technologies that is part of the Fantasia™ colors and special effects initiative for resins, Imagio coatings technology includes Bayer Polymers' proven line of engineering thermoplastics and PPG Industries, Inc.'s specially formulated coatings.

'Together with Bayer Polymers, PPG has essentially eliminated the uncertainty typically associated with coating and resin compatibility,' said Petra L'Abbe, global market manager at PPG Industries, Inc. 'We selected a coatings system optimized for Bayer Polymers' line of engineering resins.

By working hand-in-hand with Bayer Polymers engineers, we are able to provide a collaborative solution that enables us to commercialize products much more quickly.'

PPG Industries, Inc.'s coatings are spray-applied to Bayer Polymers' resins using a two-step process, and even a three-step process for some special effects, which includes the application of pigmented basecoat(s) and a clearcoat finish. This process helps to diminish the visual impact of possible defects that could occur during part molding, thus reducing part reject rates.

Color Your World With Fantasia

'Our customers are always looking at new ways to differentiate their products in the marketplace,' said John Skabardonis, marketing manager of the Fantasia colors and effects program at Bayer Polymers. 'PPG Industries, Inc.'s coatings add yet another option for product designers to add colors and effects to plastics.'

Introduced to the market in late 2002, Fantasia is the industry's most complete, one-stop solution for color and special effects. To meet customer's wide range of design, processing and cost parameters, the Fantasia resin effects initiative includes five separate technologies and more than 100 different visual and tactile effects:

Aura™ - A proprietary color infusion technology.
Leda™ - Compounded color effect options for resins.
Imagio™ - High quality see and feel coatings.
Faria™ - Film-insert molding technology.
Milena™ - Colors for optical media.

'Never before could a customer choose so many color and special effect technologies from one supplier,' added Skabardonis.
