BAYER POLYMERS UPGRADES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CAPABILITIES
12 March 2003 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer Polymers has made a multi-million-dollar investment to upgrade its research and development capabilities at its Americas headquarters in Pittsburgh.

The investment includes the renovation and installation of several new labs at its Americas Technical Center. The labs are designed to help develop and test new plastics, polyurethane and coatings materials, evaluate applications and processes, and provide technical support to wide range of polymers customers.

The updated Americas Technical Center includes a state-of-the-art environmental testing chamber, a weathering lab, and laboratories to conduct research and development activities intended to advance various polymer processes, including injection molding, coextrusion and thermoforming. Two similar centers are located in Leverkusen, Germany, and Shanghai, China.

In Late 2002, Bayer Consolidated Resources To Pittsburgh

Bayer has taken steps to consolidate many of its technical competencies within the Americas Technical Center. The company first closed its plastics-focused research and development facility in Indian Orchard, Mass., relocating several employees and various technologies to Pittsburgh. These employees began work in the Americas Technical Center late last year.

'We felt the timing was right to put many of our key resources under one roof,' said Bob Kumpf, who leads Bayer Polymers Americas' Industry Innovation Creative Center. 'This allows us to better take advantage of many unrealized technical and cost synergies across our businesses.'

Americas Technical Center Is Part Of Bayer Polymers' Long-Term Growth Strategy; Focus On Innovation

On January 1, 2003, Bayer formed four new independent companies: Bayer HealthCare, Bayer CropScience, Bayer Chemicals, and Bayer Polymers. Bayer Polymers combines the people and resources within four former Bayer Corporation divisions: Plastics, Polyurethanes, Coatings and Colorants, and Rubber. Bayer Polymers, with its Americas headquarters in Pittsburgh, became a legally independent company in February 2003.

'The Americas Technical Center is a major investment in the future of Bayer Polymers in the Americas,' said Kumpf. 'The Center includes shared laboratories between our plastics, polyurethane and coatings businesses . As we continue to invest in our technical competencies within the Center, there will be more opportunities to take advantage of the synergies between all of our Polymers businesses. This will add more value for our customers, who are looking for a one-stop shop for material and technical solutions,' he said.

Future investments are expected in the Americas Technical Center.

'New technologies and specialized technical capabilities will continue to be key drivers for success in our competitive market,' added Kumpf. 'Our efforts thus far in the Americas have prepared us for our transformation into Bayer Polymers, which will allow us to more effectively serve our customers worldwide and better equip us for future growth.'
