BAYER PLASTICS INTRODUCES POLYCARBONATE FILM WITH A CHROME LOOK
31 October 2002 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| Bayer Plastics' Film business is introducing Makrofol® DPF 5016, a polycarbonate film with a chrome look - a new effect that is part of Fantasia'sTM FariaTM line of colors and special effects for engineering resins.

Makrofol DPF 5016 has a gloss first surface, a matte second surface, and is available in a thickness range of 0.005 to 0.022 inches. Both surfaces are printable and the film is formable by both high pressure forming and hydro-forming methods. The film is specially designed for applications requiring a bright chrome look, such as automotive interiors, backlit deadfront graphics and telecommunications applications. 'Our customers are looking for ways to include special effects in their next generation product designs,' said Patrick Griffin, Senior Technical Marketing Specialist, Bayer Plastics. 'The bright chrome look and the ability to incorporate backlit deadfront graphics offers many design options that were previously not possible. As part of Fantasia's Faria initiatives, Makrofol DPF 5016 and other new film effects are designed to meet these needs.' Faria - using film insert molding technology - allows users to customize their products with an essentially limitless range of color, design and graphics possibilities. Faria includes Bayer's Makrofol polycarbonate films, Bayfol® PC/PBT films, and DureflexTM TPU films - all of which are preformed and incorporated into the part during molding. Resin is shot behind decorated film, forming a finished integral part that does not require any post-molding operations. Introduced to the market in September, Fantasia is the industry's most complete, one-stop solution for color and special effects. To meet customers' wide range of design, processing and cost parameters, Fantasia includes five separate technologies for adding visual and tactile effects: AuraTM - A proprietary color infusion technology. LedaTM - Compounded color effect options for resins. ImagioTM - High quality see and feel coatings. FariaTM - Film-insert molding technology. MilenaTM - Colorsfor optical media.
