CORPORATE AND PRIVATE RESEARCHERS DEVELOP NEW FLAME TEST TO EVALUATE FLAMMABILITY OF UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE COMPONENT MATERIALS
14 October 2002 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

A group of scientists from Bayer Corporation, Huntsman Polyurethanes, BASF Corporation and Grand Fire Consulting Group have helped develop a small open flame test using mass loss as the prime criterion for evaluating the flammability of upholstered furniture composites.

The scientists anticipate their work could lead to the development of a test method for evaluating the response of laboratory-scale upholstered furniture mock-ups to a small open flame ignition source.

The scientists - Richard Skorpenske of Bayer Corporation, Brian Fogg of Huntsman Polyurethanes, Dr. Arthur F. Grand of the Grand Fire Consulting Group and Dr. Kurt A. Reimann and Roy F. Pask of BASF Corporation, represent the API Combustibility Committee. The gentlemen will present their findings Tuesday afternoon at the Alliance for the Polyurethanes Industry (API) Polyurethanes Conference 2002 here in a paper entitled Using A Mass Loss Technique to Evaluate Furniture Flammability in Small Scale.

The small-scale test rig is modeled after that in the BS-5852 standard and uses a composite specimen, according to the scientists. The objectives of their flame test research efforts, the gentlemen state, were:

To develop certain flammability data on fabric-foam composite test specimens that are representative of materials used in U.S. residential upholstered furniture;
Analyze and interpret the data and create a methodfor presenting the results in a simplified but quantitative manner that would permit easy interpretation and extrapolation to full scale furniture evaluations; and Develop a test procedure that could be useful to regulatory groups interested in the evaluation of upholstered furniture flammability resistance.
