BAYER PLASTICS AND ACHESON COLLOIDS COMPANY TO PROMOTE FORMABLE SHIELDING
29 August 2002 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| Bayer Plastics and Acheson Colloids Company of Port Huron, Mich., have entered a joint development agreement to promote formable shielding film using Achesons conductive inks and Bayer's Makrofol® and Bayfol® polycarbonate based films. |
Bayer will offer its expertise in Film Insert Molding (FIM) as it applies to Acheson's formable shielding technology. In the shielding process, Electrodag1 SP-405 ink is printed onto Bayer's Makrofol and Bayfol polycarbonate films, thermoformed into three-dimensional parts, then injection molded to create molded parts with integrated shielding. Electromagnetic or radio frequency interference shielding prevents interference from surrounding energy forces from disrupting electronic devices. The technology can be applied selectively or it can be custom tailored to the application. It can also be applied as the final layer of a film insert molding application, eliminating the need to mask and paint molded parts, which can be costly and environmentally unfriendly. 'Bayer has both the experience and expertise in film insert molding that Acheson needed for this project,' said Patrick Griffin, Bayer Senior Technical Marketing Specialist. Potential applications for formable shielding film include: cellular phones, lap top computers, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, and medical applications.
