BAYER CORPORATION AWARDED PATENT FOR MICA REINFORCED POLYURETHANE AND POLYUREA COMPOSITE TECHNOLOGIES USED IN REACTION INJECTION MOLDING OPERATIONS
29 July 2002 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

The patent (U.S. 6,326,428 B1) was issued to Bayer Corporation December 1, 2001, and relates to polyurethane and polyurea systems useful in reaction injection molding and specifically to such systems using mica as the reinforcing agent.

'We're pleased to receive patent protection for our effort in developing this technology,' said Lawrence D. Stern, Executive Vice President, Bayer Corporation, and President, Polyurethanes Division.

The incorporation of mica in the RIM process ensures predictable, uniform shrinkage in lightweight, impact resistant molded parts. As such, auto manufacturers and heavy equipment makers regard it as the best technology for producing large molded parts such as truck fenders and body panels for off-highway and construction equipment.

Bayer currently utilizes mica technology in its Bayflex® 110 system, as well as its Bayflex® 180 and Bayflex® 190 elastomeric polyurea reinforced RIM (RRIM) systems.

'The patent is evidence of Bayer's continuing commitment to develop better polyurethane solutions for our customers,' Stern added.
