When Delphi Connection Systems took over production of 2mm header connectors for a new commercial microprocessor customer, they found themselves facing some pretty big issues with the LCP being used in the application. These issues led them right to DSM Engineering Plastics, whose Stanyl TE250F6 grade proved itself the perfect material to overcome the challenges, and realize substantial cost savings for both Delphi and its customer. “When we got the business, the customer was already using LCP,” recalled Harold Leiter, Senior Applications Engineer at Delphi Connection Systems. “We found that during the assembly process, we were experiencing excess flash during the pin insertion, which resulted in the need for a lot of rework and cleaning.” To address that issue, Delphi turned to a proven partner, DSM Engineering Plastics. Delphi had been working with Stanyl since it was first introduced in 1991. Sure enough, as soon as Delphi started using Stanyl, the issues were immediately resolved. “It’s just the type of application that Stanyl is perfect for,” agreed Kelli Sisler, Application Development Engineer/Connectors, Stanyl with DSM Engineering Plastics. “Stanyl provides processing consistency for part dimensions, and like all nylons, it’s got that tremendously valuable combination of strength and stiffness - perfect for resolving the issues Delphi was facing.” Stanyl had an advantage over the LCP in this application because its resilience allowed it to absorb the plastic/pin interface rather than shearing away. This eliminated the plastic debris and provided improved pin retention. “The real story here is that by cutting out the assembly issues, Delphi saved significant costs on the rework, and by utilizing Stanyl as a replacement material, we realised additional monthly savings on the material that proved beneficial to the customer - it’s a real win-win situation,” said Leiter.

About: DSM Engineering Plastics
DSM Engineering Plastics is a business group forming part of DSM's Performance Materials cluster. DSM EP is a global supplier of Stanyl PA46 and Akulon 6 and 66 polyamides, Arnitel TPE-E, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Xantar polycarbonate, Yparex extrudable adhesive resins, and Stamylan UH Ultra High Molecular Weight PE. These materials are used in technical components for electrical appliances, electronic equipment and cars, in barrier packaging films as well as in many mechanical and extrusion applications. The business group had annual sales of EUR 566 million in 2003. With Stanyl, it is the global market leader in high heat polyamides.Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl’s high crystallinity (70% versus 50% for conventional PA66) results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190C for unreinforced grades, up to 290C for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, charge air coolers, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.
