BAYER PLASTICS BACKS BIKE TEAM'S DREAMS
17 May 2002 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| With two former Olympians and seven national champions, past and present, the International Cycling Union (UCI) - registered Prime Alliance Cycling Team stands at the top of U.S. national circuit rankings. |
To sustain the team's success, many ingredients must go into the recipe - equipment, maintenance, travel, training costs, to name a few. Prime Alliance, a plastics distributor and the team's title sponsor, leads the effort to supply those ingredients. Helping the company achieve its goals for the team is Bayer Plastics. In support of one of its valuable distributors, Bayer has agreed to sponsor the Prime Alliance cycling team. Terms of the sponsorship were not disclosed. 'This is a great show of unity by Bayer Plastics to the industry,' said Tom Irvine, president and CEO of Prime Alliance. 'When we decided to launch the Prime Alliance Cycling Team, we wanted it to be plastics driven - and Bayer's support lends credibility to the concept.' Bayer's Made with Makrolon® logo will appear on riders' vehicles, uniforms, the club van and event signage. Makrolon is Bayer's brand of polycarbonate resin. This versatile material is used in such diverse applications as CDs, DVDs, water bottles and medical devices. 'Our team is a classic Cinderella story - last year, as a start-up, we lacked credibility; now we are the number-one ranked team in the U.S. with Chris Horner as the number-one ranked rider in the U.S.,' said Roy Knickman, Prime Alliance Cycling Team general manager, and Olympic bronze medalist. 'This is a great opportunity to communicate to cyclists and cycling fans, many of whom are very environmentally conscious, that plastics make our team possible - and this is a good thing.' In addition to Bayer's sponsorship support, Prime Alliance Team members also benefit from RoyalGel from Bayer AG, which is used to cushion the Prime Alliance Team's cycle saddles. 'Bayer believes that good business is built on good relationships,' said Azita Owlia, vice president of consumer markets for Bayer Plastics. 'Bayer's support of the Prime Alliance Cycling Team follows this philosophy while reaching out to many key audiences - our distributor, race fans and the general public, who are often not aware of the critical role plastics, like Makrolon polycarboante, play in our everyday lives.'
