BAYER PLASTICS' ENGINEERING RESINS GIVE GLOSS, RIGIDITY AND DURABILITY TO AFTERMARKET GOLF-CART TOPS

With offices in the golf-friendly states of Georgia and Florida, Primex Plastics Corporation and Piper Plastics, Inc. knew they needed materials for their aftermarket golf-cart tops that could withstand high heat and the blazing sun.

That's why they selected Bayer Plastics' Centrex® 833 acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylic (ASA) and Lustran® 752 acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins.

Bayer Plastics worked with the two companies to develop a Centrex/Lustran system that would meet the cart tops' design specifications. The Centrex ASA resin cap provides high weatherability and a high-gloss finish that resists fading, cracking and yellowing. The Lustran ABS resin offers high rigidity and better aesthetics than other resins that were considered.

Primex Plastics co-extrudes the Centrex ASA resin over Lustran ABS resin and supplies the 0.188-inch-thick sheet to Piper Plastics, where the cart tops are thermoformed. The tops, which come in 48-56- and 80-inch sizes, are distributed by Blue Dot U.S. Supply to golf-cart dealers across the country.

'The co-extruded sheet also has excellent processing characteristics,' said Blain McCormack, vice president of sales and marketing, Piper Plastics. 'From a thermoforming standpoint, the material heats well and forms to the full detail of the mold. The finished part has excellent surface quality and retains a very high-gloss finish.'

Bayer recommended co-extruded sheets of its Centrex weatherable polymer and Lustran ABS for the golf-cart top based on the materials' performance in other outdoor applications that demanded attractive appearance and sturdy construction. As with any product, the Bayer material was tested for suitability.

'When specifying the materials for our sheet, we take into account criteria such as end-use environment and average exposure duration,' said Jeff Gusaeff, southeast regional sales manager of Primex Plastics. 'For the golf-cart top, it was essential to provide UV protection, and this mandated a Centrex cap for the sheet.'
