BAYER PLASTICS INTRODUCES A NEW LINE OF ALIPHATIC THERMOPLASTIC POLYURETHANES
22 January 2002 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer Plastics introduces a new line of aliphatic thermoplastic polyurethanes (ATPUs) that are designed for use in rigorous outdoor applications.

Part of Bayer's Desmopan® line, these new ATPUs are fully colorable and provide sports-related, electronic, leisure, and industrial equipment with UV-color stability, increased elasticity, heat resistance and improved rebound characteristics. The new grades range in shore hardness from 85A to 56D.

'The reason most pieces of outdoor equipment are always a dark color is simple,' said Gerald DiBattista, market development specialist for Bayer Plastics. 'Dark colors do not fade or yellow when exposed to different weathering conditions like intense sunlight. The chemistry behind our new line of Desmopan ATPUs makes it possible to design and keep outdoor products a bright color.'

These ATPUs can be overmolded onto other substrates to provide a product with a unique feel and a durable and flexible surface. They are designed to readily bond to a variety of thermoplastic substrates such as ABS, PC, PS, copolyesters, rigid PVC and certain other plastics. Also, by incorporating mechanical interlocks, the ATPUs can be overmolded onto virtually any substrate.

Current applications for these new ATPUs include an outdoor industrial scale, personal exercise monitoring device, and athletic footwear.
