BAYER CORPORATION POSTER PAPER ILLUSTRATES ALTERNATIVE BLOWING AGENT PERFORMANCE IN PICNIC COOLERS

Environmental regulations will soon force ozone-depleting potential (ODP) blowing agents to be phased out, and makers of picnic coolers are among those manufacturers that will need to explore the use of alternative blowing agents for insulating their products.

Bayer Corporation researchers prepared a poster paper with data about the available blowing agent technologies.

Jone Cionni, Technical Project Leader, Insulation, and V. Michael Mautino, Research and Development Specialist, Insulation, for Bayer's Polyurethanes Division co-authored the poster, which illustrates data generated on non-ODP blowing agents in machine trials performed by Bayer. The trials tested several rigid polyurethane foam insulation systems produced with approved non-ODP blowing agents, including HFC-134a, HFC-245fa and water, and combinations of the three.

Cionni displayed 'Performance of Non-ODP Rigid Foams in Picnic Coolers' at the Alliance for the Polyurethane Industry's Polyurethanes Conference 2001 here.

The poster does not recommend one blowing agent over another, but rather presents each blowing agent's individual strengths and weaknesses. Data describes foam reactivity, test-panel physical properties, and results of Ice Retention (I-R) and Reverse Heat Leak (Bayer RHL) tests on finished coolers.

'Bayer developed this data to help picnic cooler manufacturers decide which blowing agent is best-suited to their needs,' said Cionni. 'The rigid polyurethane insulation system is only one factor affecting thermal performance. While a less expensive blowing agent might yield a system that shows slightly poorer thermal performance, technical design can compensate for this by including, for example, a better sealing mechanism for the cooler.'
