OPTIMIZED PIGMENTS FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SYSTEMS
02 August 2001 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer has expanded its colorants portfolio with a number of products that satisfy the high requirements for modern coating systems. Three new quinacridone pigments with improved rheological properties are available - Quindo® Magenta RV-6883, Quindo Magenta RV-6858 and Quindo Violet RV- 6956.

These are ideal for use in high-solids systems. The copper phthalocyanine pigment Palomar® Blue B-4828 with special flop properties extends the range of phthalocyanine blue pigments for use in automotive coatings - primarily waterborne basecoats.

The Bayplast® range is marketed for powder coatings. New modified products with improved dispersion and handling properties are now available. Some pigments are also supplied as low-dusting granules which are easier to meter. Bayer's aim is to switch this entire range to granular supply forms during 2001.

The Bayer organic pigments yield maximum lightfastness and weather stability. The combination of various basic colors makes it possible to create almost every shade desired. The highly transparent Perrindo reg; perylene pigments are used mainly in red metallic or special-effect coatings, often in combination with quinacridone pigments. The Quindo quinacridone pigments are used in metallic, special-effect and solid-color coatings. The Palomar copper phthalocyanine pigments are characterized by their neutral flop and are used primarily in special-effect coatings for automotive applications. Fanchon® Fast Yellow Y- 5688 is a greenish yellow pigment with high fastness properties and extremely high tinting strength for use in solid-color and special-effect coatings. Combinations of this product with Bayer inorganic pigments from the Bayferrox® and Lightfast families are substitutes for lead-based yellow pigments.

At K 2001, Bayer will be displaying its inorganic pigments with high tinting strength from the Bayferrox, Colortherm& reg;, Chrome Oxide Green and Lightfast product families. The focus is on products for facade and roof coatings, architectural paints, automotive and industrial finishes.

The Colortherm product family consists of special lightfast and weather-stable inorganic pigments that are characterized above all by their high heat stability. This makes them ideal for coloring industrial coating systems that are baked at high temperatures. The high heat stability needed for this application is achieved by a complex inorganic treatment process or by a chemical reaction during manufacture. The pigments contain neither cadmium nor lead.
