ISOCYANATE-MODIFIED URETHANE ACRYLATES
02 August 2001 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer has developed a range of urethane acrylates with free NCO groups for use in radiation-curing applications. The first commercially available grade - Roskydal® UA VP LS 2337 - is a key product for the up- and-coming dual-cure technology.

Dual-cure coatings harden in a two-stage process. The first stage is normal photopolymerization, followed by the reaction of the isocyanate groups. This process means that crosslinking also occurs on those areas of an object where exposure to the light source is reduced or where the object's geometry casts shadows. Dual-cure coatings are therefore ideal for application on three-dimensional objects. A further benefit resulting from their polyurethane chemistry is that they improve the adhesion of UV-curing systems on many plastics and metals.

The Roskydal UA range also includes three new unsaturated polyester resins in acrylate reactive thinners. These special UP resins combine the advantages of UP chemistry - good body, good adhesion on wood and good sandability - with the benefits, especially the high reactivity, of acrylate chemistry. The new systems cure in seconds - true to the adage that time is money.
