BAYER CORPORATION AND ORBSEAL LLC CREATE A PARTNERSHIP TO PROVIDE POLYURETHANE FOAM NVH ABATEMENT TECHNOLOGIES TO VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS
12 June 2001 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer Corporation, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Orbseal LLC, Plymouth, Mich., announced today that they have reached an agreement to engineer, market and sell polyurethane foams for the abatement of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) to automotive manufacturers.

Under the agreement, Orbseal will offer to automotive OEMs a series of Bayer NVH abatement foams as well as other Bayer engineered polyurethane foams for structural enhancement applications. Orbseal will offer these products under the marketing umbrella Engineered Polyurethane Foam Solutions.

Orbseal will provide Bayer Bayfill® NV foams to OEMs that will inject the foams into side cavities and pillars of the vehicle body shells on the assembly line. In these applications, Bayer Bayfill NV foams will provide weight-saving, cost- efficient sound absorption and noise attenuation properties to the vehicle by reducing sound propagation through the hollow paths of the car body.

In addition, Orbseal will provide custom- engineered Bayfill® ST foams that can be injected into structural elements of the vehicle body to enhance mechanical integrity. In such applications, Bayfill ST structural foams can be engineered to increase body stiffness and adjust vibration behavior, which improves handling and passenger comfort. Bayfill ST foams also act as an effective sound barrier.

'We're very pleased to partner with Bayer to deliver cost-effective Engineered Polyurethane Foam Solutions to the OEMs' NVH abatement concerns,' said Gary S. Karas, Business Development Manager for Orbseal. 'We have a long history in introducing sound abatement technologies,' Karas continued. 'As tighter regulations continue to drive innovation in automotive design and OEMs place greater emphasis on safety-enhancing voice activated electronics, forward- thinking suppliers must develop new solutions to new concerns. We see foamed- in-place polyurethane NVH abatement technologies as the next economical design solution for tighter sound-deadening guidelines developed to reduce driver distraction.'

'By partnering with Orbseal early in the design stage of product development, we can engineer polyurethane cavity-filling foams to provide almost any degree or combination of acoustic, energy management and structural enhancing properties,' said Adam Hall, Business Director for Bayer Corporation's Automotive Interiors Business Group. 'We can draw on decades of accumulated developmental and applications knowledge in a wide range of similar polyurethane technologies. We have extensive prototyping and physical testing capabilities with which to characterize the performance of these polyurethane cavity- filling foams.

'Together, Orbseal and Bayer can quietly drive the science of NVH abatement and structural enhancement to a higher level.'
