BAYER AG AND MMORE INTERNATIONAL BV MAKE MAKROLON® MORE VISIBLE
11 May 2001 - Bayer MaterialScience AG

Bayer AG's Plastics Business Group has announced a co- branding effort with MMore International BV, a Dutch manufacturer of rewritable and recordable CDs and DVDs. The effort will feature 'Made of Makrolon®' quality labels on all MMore polycarbonate storage media.

'One wrong bit in a billion can render a CD-R worthless,' said Gerben Borsje, MMore Commercial Director. 'The disc needs to be absolutely transparent and must meet the strictest standards of data security. Only the purest plastic can meet these requirements, which is why we chose Makrolon polycarbonate resin, and are willing to put 'Made of Makrolon' on our products.'

Makrolon resin combines a number of qualities essential to the reliable performance of optical storage media, including high transparency, low water absorption, low birefringence and dimensional stability. Makrolon resin is used in a variety of other applications, including automotive headlamp lenses, surgical devices and water bottles.

'Everyone hasalready touched Makrolon resin without knowing it,' said Hans-Dieter Reifenrath, who is responsible for Bayer's Makrolon branding concept. 'We would like to make people aware that Makrolon material is something you encounter every day. We partnered with MMore to help raise the level of recognition.'

The co-branding effort is another example of how Bayer is strengthening its commitment to polycarbonate and the optical media industry. In December, Bayer announced its intention to become the world's leading polycarbonate manufacturer. The company recently invested $860 million to strengthen its technical capabilities and double its annual Makrolon resin production capacity from its present level of 650,000 tons per year to roughly 1.3 millions by 2005.

To stay at the forefront of storage media technical development, Bayer also recently expanded DVD capabilities at its Optical Media Laboratory in Pittsburgh, adding a full DVD production line, downstream finishing equipment, and upgraded measurement and inspection capabilities.

In the Netherlands, MMore, which stands for Multi Media Optical Recording Excellence, is the leading manufacturer of high-quality storage media, with a 22-percent market share. Sold in many major European retail chains, MMore's products enjoy a strong presence in more than 20 countries.

Part of the popularity of MMore products is due to a special surface that protects discs' rewritable side from mechanical damage and reduces the impact of UV rays, extending overall service life. In the audio CD market, the company's products have received accolades from the European trade press.

'This motivates us to become even better,' said Ruud Wijnants, MMore Chief Executive Officer. 'MMore stands for quality and innovation, and we hope working in cooperation with Bayer will lead customers to our newest development, a compatible CD-R with a 1-to-24 multispeed factor, so they, too, can enjoy the benefits of this strong partnership.'
