BAYER CORPORATION'S NEW BROCHURE HIGHLIGHTS NEW MDI-PREPOLYMERS FOR MICROCELLULAR POLYURETHANE APPLICATIONS

With its new generation of MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) prepolymers, Bayer Corporation offers customers greater formulating and processing latitudes for footwear and integral skin microcellular foam polyurethane applications.

A technical report titled 'A New Generation of MDI- Prepolymers for Microcellular Polyurethanes' now available from Bayer's Polyurethanes Division highlights the new prepolymers and the enhanced versatility of these products in polyurethane systems.

Based on a technical paper co- authored by Kurt E. Walter, Dennis F. Yajko and William E. Slack, of Bayer's Polyurethanes Division, the brochure describes the results obtained with these new materials and the benefits of this technology in both polyether and polyester formulations.

The new prepolymers have a number of strong points that extend the versatility of microcellular foam polyurethane systems. For example, the prepolymers are less sensitive to crystallization than other commercial prepolymers and have inherently low viscosities. This gives processors more freedom in formulating their polyurethane systems, allowing them to expand the range of properties for microcellular foams. Storage, handling and processing also are easier.

Although the primary application is footwear, the new prepolymers may be extended to other integral skin and microcellular foam polyurethane applications, such as airless tires, armrests and seating.
