RELIABLE STONE CHIPPING PROTECTION THANKS TO POLYURETHANE COATING
13 April 2005 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| In Europe, the majority of stone chipping protection fillers used in OEM automotive coating applications are formulated with polyurethane raw materials. This is the coating applied directly to the cathodic dip primer. |
In addition to protecting the steel body against mechanical damage from flying stones or loose chippings, it also levels out any irregularities in the substrate. Desmotherm® from Bayer MaterialScience AG has proven to be well-suited as the binder for the formulation of solvent-borne polyurethane baking coatings. The company also markets the product Bayhydrol® VP LS 2378, which was developed for the formulation of waterborne fillers. This product has now been renamed BayhythermTM 3146 to become the first of the new BayhythermTM line of products, the direct counterpart to Desmotherm®. “By so doing, we have brought consistency to the naming system for baking urethanes,” says Heino Müller, an expert on polyurethane fillers with the Coatings, Adhesives, Sealants Business Unit of Bayer MaterialScience. DD coatings has long been an established name for solvent-borne and solvent-free coatings based on the Desmodur® and Desmophen® line of raw materials from Bayer MaterialScience. The raw materials Bayhydur® and Bayhydrol® are also well-established on the market as their counterparts for waterborne coatings. To be consistent, coatings formulated with these raw materials could be called BB coatings.
