STANYL NYLON 46 FOR VW INTERCOOLER ENDCAPS
04 March 2004 - DSM Engineering Plastics

Stanyl TW200F6 has been selected for the intercooler end-caps of Volkswagen.

Stanyl TW200F6 has been selected for the intercooler end-caps of Volkswagen. The end-caps are connected to both sides of the aluminium intercooler body. Hot air with a temperature up to 210C enters at one side and is cooled down in the intercooler. The aluminium intercooler and the plastic end-caps need to be capable of withstanding intermittently applied pressures of up to 2bar.

To ensure the sealing integrity to the aluminium body at the elevated temperatures encountered, the material used for the end-caps has to have a high modulus and excellent creep and fatigue resistance.

Stanyl TW200F6 – a high temperature resistant PA46 reinforced with 30% glass fibres - offers a unique combination of stiffness, high fatigue resistance and excellent heat-ageing resistance while at the same time providing a high quality surface. In addition, Stanyl has excellent flow properties and its fast rate of crystallization lead to short cycle times.

Intercoolers cool down turbocharged air and this allows maximum power to be obtained from - mainly diesel - engines. The use of a turbocharger in combination with a charge air cooler allows car manufacturers to equip cars with smaller and lighter engines which are more environmentally friendly.

The full Stanyl family of PA46 formulations is produced and marketed exclusively by DSM Engineering Plastics and delivers a performance similar to high end materials such as liquid crystal polymer (LCP), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) combined with the ease of processing and design of PA6, PA66, polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) and polythene terephthalate (PET).

Stanyl formulations provide resistance to high temperatures, good mould flow behaviour, excellent mould and tooling longevity, and overall economy of processing. Stanyl PA46 is offered in a wide variety of grades, including unfilled and reinforced (glass fibre and mineral), self-lubricating, impact-modified, and flame-retardant.

About: DSM Engineering Plastics
DSM Engineering Plastics is a business group forming part of DSM's Performance Materials cluster. DSM EP is a global supplier of Stanyl PA46 and Akulon 6 and 66 polyamides, Arnitel TPE-E, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Xantar polycarbonate, Yparex extrudable adhesive resins, and Stamylan UH Ultra High Molecular Weight PE. These materials are used in technical components for electrical appliances, electronic equipment and cars, in barrier packaging films as well as in many mechanical and extrusion applications. The business group had annual sales of EUR 566 million in 2003. With Stanyl, it is the global market leader in high heat polyamides.

Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl’s high crystallinity (70% versus 50% for conventional PA66) results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190C for unreinforced grades, up to 290C for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, charge air coolers, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.
