NEW PBT GRADE FOR AUTMOTIVE HEADLAMP BEZELS
24 February 2004 - DSM Engineering Plastics

The new Arnite XL PBT, specifically designed for automotive headlamp bezels, is now available from DSM Engineering Plastics.

DSM Engineering Plastics has released Arnite XL, a new grade of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) designed for automotive lamp bezel applications.

Arnite XL offers high strength and stiffness, excellent flow and the ability to consolidate material usage. More importantly, Arnite XL offers exceptional resistance to outgassing at high temperatures, dimensional stability, and the capability to be vacuum-metallised without painting.

“Arnite XL emerged from a collaboration with customers to develop a material that flows well, has high temperature resistance and dimensional stability, and resists lamp fogging,” said Robert Evans, General Product Manager – Arnite for DSM Engineering Plastics. “Where customers have traditionally had unique application requirements for Polycarbonate, Polyamide 6/6 and PBT, they can now consolidate their demand into one grade, Arnite XL, which meets all of their combined requirements.”

Arnite XL has good mould flow properties, allowing designers great freedom for designing deep ribs, mounting tabs, and other sharply defined geometric part attributes. Arnite XL compliments a broad range of Arnite PBT and PET formulations from DSM Engineering Plastics.

Arnite grades are used in a wide variety of automotive electrical and electronic applications such as ignition components, fuse boxes, lighting enclosures, door handles, electric motor covers, gear housings and electrical connectors to name only a few.

About: DSM Engineering Plastics
DSM Engineering Plastics is a business group forming part of DSM's Performance Materials cluster. DSM EP is a global supplier of Stanyl PA46 and Akulon 6 and 66 polyamides, Arnitel TPE-E, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Xantar polycarbonate, Yparex extrudable adhesive resins, and Stamylan UH Ultra High Molecular Weight PE. These materials are used in technical components for electrical appliances, electronic equipment and cars, in barrier packaging films as well as in many mechanical and extrusion applications. The business group had annual sales of EUR 566 million in 2003. With Stanyl, it is the global market leader in high heat polyamides.

Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl’s high crystallinity (70% versus 50% for conventional PA66) results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190C for unreinforced grades, up to 290C for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, charge air coolers, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.
