NEW COMPETENCE CENTER FOR PC FILM PROCESSING
29 June 2004 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| Bayer MaterialScience AG has established a new Technical Service Center for polycarbonate films at its Leverkusen site. Opened officially in early June 2004, the center enhances the ability of the Polycarbonates Business Unit to study application engineering issues, find solutions for customers and develop new films made from Makrolon®. |
The former Technical Service Center for films at the Dormagen site was transferred to the new one in Leverkusen. In the process, existing installations were modernized and new equipment was installed. Roland Künzel, head of the Technical Service Center, explains: "All the equipment required to carry out the various steps in film processing is now available at the new Technical Service Center. We can simulate a customer's complete production chain. From printing all the way to thermoforming polycarbonate films, we can evaluate our films under virtual production conditions. Moreover, we can get newly developed products to market rapidly and support the launch phase." A new screen-printing unit and two Niebling High Pressure Forming machines are a highlight of the Technical Service Center. Various competencies have also been combined for the use of Makrofol® and Bayfol® films in Film Insert Molding (FIM), also known as In-Mold Decoration (IMD). As a result, printed and thermoformed films can now be back-injected with other thermoplastics at the existing Injection Molding Technical Service Center located right in the same building. One key field of application offering enormous growth opportunities for polycarbonate films is ID cards. Like other fields, it requires comprehensive know-how. The Technical Service Center has all the facilities needed to reproduce the entire range of working steps. Künzel explains: "With the new Technical Service Center, we can further expand our acknowledged competence in polycarbonate films and their processing. It will help us to develop innovative applications even more efficiently, maintain our position as a trendsetter in technology and expand our strong market presence. Drawing on our extensive expertise in processing, we support our Makrofol® and Bayfol® customers with both existing and new applications."
