PSA PEUGEOT CITROËN CHOOSES AKULON PA6 FOR ITS MANIFOLDS
21 January 2004 - DSM Engineering Plastics

For the production of two manifolds, PSA Peugeot Citroën has selected Akulon PA6 for offering superior heat ageing resistance, better weldability and easier processability compared to PA66.

Akulon PA6 from DSM Engineering Plastics was selected by PSA Peugeot Citroën for the production of two new manifolds. Engineered and produced by Mecaplast/ Namkey, the TU5 JP4 is an advanced conventional manifold. The other key application is the DV4 TD – a complete module, consisting of manifold, integrated valve cover, air fuel filter and EGR.

Complex and highly demanding parts such as these need to perform to exceptionally high standards – as set by steel and aluminium. Components are expected to perform under high pressure for extended periods of time – and need to outlive the car’s economic lifetime.

In addition to delivering the same performance as steel and aluminium, Akulon PA6 also allows for parts integration and weight reduction. With outstanding material behaviour and easy recycling, Akulon PA6 offers superior heat ageing resistance, better weldability and easier processability than PA66, leading to better price/performance levels.

Akulon PA6 is available in a wide range of grades, ranging from heat stabilised to glass filled blow moulding grades, and was developed to allow systems suppliers and engineers to reduce production costs and weight, leading to an overall saving in fuel consumption.

Manufactured by DSM Engineering Plastics, a business group within DSM Performance Materials, Akulon PA6 is widely used for a wide range of under-the-bonnet applications such as engine covers, acoustic covers, pulley covers and air-ducts.

About: DSM Engineering Plastics
DSM Engineering Plastics is a business group forming part of DSM's Performance Materials cluster. DSM EP is a global supplier of Stanyl PA46 and Akulon 6 and 66 polyamides, Arnitel TPE-E, Arnite PBT and PET polyesters, Xantar polycarbonate, Yparex extrudable adhesive resins, and Stamylan UH Ultra High Molecular Weight PE. These materials are used in technical components for electrical appliances, electronic equipment and cars, in barrier packaging films as well as in many mechanical and extrusion applications. The business group had annual sales of EUR 566 million in 2003. With Stanyl, it is the global market leader in high heat polyamides.

Stanyl is a family of heat-resistant polyamides from DSM Engineering Plastics. Stanyl’s high crystallinity (70% versus 50% for conventional PA66) results in high heat distortion temperatures of 190C for unreinforced grades, up to 290C for reinforced. Stanyl grades are used in automotive clutch plates, charge air coolers, chain tensioners; electrical components including motor frames and end laminates, circuit breakers, controls and connectors; and home and power tool components, including heat shields and heat-resistant utensils.
