RAPID RENEWAL OF OLD DRINKING WATER MAINS
18 April 2005 - Bayer MaterialScience AG
| A new 2-component polyurethane (PU) system from British coatings manufacturer E. Wood can be used for renovating even heavily damaged drinking water mains. |
Thanks to this system, coatings up to five millimeters thick can be applied to the inside of the pipes in a single step with no air bubbles. The integral coating is based on a novel solvent-free aliphatic polyisocyanate prepolymer from Bayer MaterialScience AG. A rotary atomizer that travels through the water pipe on a sled applies the polyurethane coating evenly. The coating cures completely within a few minutes even at temperatures below 10 °C. Domestic connections branching off from the water mains remain open during this process. Alternative methods such as "pipe in pipe" technology, however, require main connections to be redrilled and then resealed. "The new polyurethane system offers enormous advantages in terms of productivity," says Dr. Malte Homann, expert in corrosion protection coatings at Bayer MaterialScience. The amount of time that can be saved has been shown by initial tests in the UK, where a 150-meter section of pipe with a series of domestic connections was completely renovated within one and a half days. With traditional technology, this would have required one and a half weeks instead. The integral polyurethane coating stabilizes the ailing pipes and also protects them effectively against corrosion. In addition, its smooth surface prevents the formation of deposits, thus enabling an unimpeded flow of water through the pipes long into the future.
