With its new transparent Bayfol® DP 1202 film, Bayer MaterialScience AG has added a particularly heat-resistant grade to its line of polycarbonate films. The service temperature of this film goes up to its softening point of 205 °C, which is more than 50 °C above that of conventional polycarbonate films.

This leap in temperature has been made possible by the use of Apec®, the Bayer MaterialScience polycarbonate developed specifically for high thermal loads. As a member of the polycarbonate family, Bayfol® DP 1202 also has the typical, well-balanced property profile.

Hans Braun, a plastic films expert at Bayer MaterialScience, explains: "With our new Bayfol® DP 1202, we are closing the gap between the proven Makrofol® grades for srvice temperatures up to 148 °C and some high-priced specialty products made of other plastics for temperatures over 250 °C.

Like our Makrofol® films made from Makrolon®, the new grade made from Apec® is highly transparent, has outstanding surface quality and can be readily printed. The new film also boasts the good mechanical properties to which we are accustomed with Makrofol®, namely high strength and dimensional stability as well as comparatively good chemical resistance. Apart from that, Bayfol® DP 1202 is easy to process, either by thermoforming or embossing."

Braun sees possible fields of application for the new film chiefly in the electrical and electronics industry where components are exposed to very high temperatures during production or service. One example would be for packaging when electronic components are stored at elevated temperatures.

Modified Apec® film would also offer advantages as a transparent carrier for flexible displays such as OLED displays (Organic Light-Emitting Diode). The new film can be subjected to higher temperatures than conventional polycarbonate film during the coating stage of the production process.

In medical technology, too, Braun sees potential applications where parts are exposed to very high temperatures during steam sterilization.

Bayer MaterialScience is marketing the new film in thicknesses of between 0.125 mm and 0.5 mm. Thicker films are, in principle, also possible. The film is available in rolls or sheets.
